Good Flow vs. the FDA

by admin on September 9, 2008

Good Flow Honey and JuiceGood Flow Honey and Juice company is an Austin institution that ranks right up there with the Alamo Drafthouse, Amy’s Ice Cream and Whole Foods. The company has been selling hand squeezed juice for the past 25 years. However, on Friday the FDA forced the company to shut its doors. The shortage of Good Flow juices is already being felt around town and the city (and internet) has been abuzz about the situation. We were unable to reach Good Flow by phone, but the word on the street was that the company had been forced by the FDA to shut down production over issues related to pasteurization. An article in today’s Daily Texan shed some light on the situation:

Good Flow co-founder Judy Crofut said the company asked the FDA for an exemption from pasteurization mandates placed upon commercial juice producers because the company produces and distributes locally and delivers its product within 24 hours.

“We have all our own processes in place to ensure that it’s good, safe juice,” Crofut said. “Pasteurization kills everything, all the enzymes that allow you to digest your food, so that was a big interest of ours.”

Hotel San Jose gets annexed

by admin on March 25, 2008

Annex San Jose

Any news about more condos being built anywhere in Austin is inevitably greeted by weeping and gnashing of teeth. But this is actually some condo news to get excited about: details are beginning to trickle out regarding the expansion of the South Congress favorite Hotel San Jose. Liz Lambert’s popular hotel will be spawning Annex San Jose – 77 condos that will range in price from $300K to $900K. The Annex will be situated right behind the hotel at the corner of West Gibson and South Congress Avenue. So why is this good news? If Lambert’s past enterprises are any indication, the Annex will be beautifully designed and true to the culture of its neighborhood. Based on the initial renderings, it looks like the Annex is on the right track.
