Hey smokers. Your life is about to get a lot more expensive. Texas has just passed a $1.00 per pack cigarette tax. That means the overall tax on a pack of cigarettes in Texas will be $1.41. If the cigarette taxes keep climbing at this rate, pretty soon politicians will start PROMOTING smoking.
The higher tax, which would kick in Sept. 1, is expected to bring $680 million to state coffers next year. That money would be used to offset school property-tax cuts that are part of Gov. Rick Perry’s tax plan to revamp the way Texas funds public education.
