Austin Chronicle in 5 minutes >> July 7, 2006

scanner darkly austin coverThe Austin Chronicle is awesome, but there are so many pages… and so many ads… who has time? And we know you read this site while you are supposed to be working anyway. In case you don’t get the chance to lounge around in a coffee shop this week, we’ll break it down for you.

COVER: Shooting and Scoring PKD. This Scanner Darkly cover by Jason Stout is one of the best covers the Austin Chronicle has had in ages. I wish it was available as a framed print.

17: A delegation of monks from the Wudang monastery in China are coming to Barton Springs on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. They are here on a dipomatic mission to share the cultural arts of Taoism with the U.S. Unfortunately, that probably rules out kicking ass.

20: Austin Monthly vs. Austin Magazine. These mags are practically identical. Now Austin Monthly is suing Austing Mag for ripping off it’s “uniquely” glossy, bland and boring style. This will have no effect on you unless you are an S.U.V. driving middle aged woman in West Austin.

Sexy Scissors

36. Sexy Scissors ad. Apparently Sexy Scissors has a website. Check it out if you dare! You can learn all about Sexy Scissors Racing and learn how you too can become a Sexy Scissors stylist. I have long been threatening to get my hair cut here so I can write an in-depth article about the sure-to-be-traumatic experience. Unfortunately, I like Bird’s Barbershop so much that I wish my hair grew faster so I would have an excuse to go there more often.

50. Richard Linklater interview. I think he’s getting really sick of talking about Scanner Darkly, but he gives it another go for the Chronicle. His interview is the current issue of Austin Daze is way better though.

54. When Hollywood Met Steve Collins. Nice write-up on the L.A. Film Festival where Austin director Steve Collins won $50,000 and Best Narrative Feature award.

55. Pee Wee’s Playhouse is coming to Adult Swim. Sure it’s out on DVD, but still… AWESOME.

82. Red River is playing at the Paramount Saturday at 4:05 and 9:05. This is one of my favorite movies, but I still have yet to see it on the big screen. Even if you hate John Wayne, you’ve got to check out this movie.
